Ok, I got good news and I got bad news. Which do y'all want first? Ok, ok, the good news. But first, some preliminaries:
The VLS project, the one I'm working on, is running out of money. Why is it running out of money, you ask? Simple. Management decided to let us have OT from the very start, and the contractors used up a whole helluva lot of it. There are like, 20 on the project. So Lockheed decided to can about half of them., and can the overtime for now.
Now, the good news: I'm on the half that are staying. My cube mate, not so much. Apparently they like the work I've been doing, and want to keep me.
And now the bad news. I found this out because my manager asked me if I'd be willing to take a pay cut. They have to save money somehow, you know… with half of them gone that would potentially save around $1,000,000 over the life of the project, plus paying everyone the same salary of $40/hr (I was making $55, still am until this goes into effect next week) could potentially save them another bundle.
Now, I have no problem with this. The project still gets done, by people who are passionate about it, and I still keep working. This is a win-win for everyone.
Part 1 of this had to do with my re-discovered old hobby… building an Amiga 1200 that works.
I have an external floppy drive, and accelerator board (with no RAM… silly ass me. the RAM this board takes is non-standard). So what did I do?
Before I learned about this pay decrease, and while I still had more money than God's uncle, I bought a second, different accelerator board with 128MB of RAM, and a scan doubler (internal) so I can work with this system on modern monitors. Google Amiga scan doublers to find out why I need one. The accelerator I'm waiting on is a 68030 with a 40MHz CPU, 128MB RAM — it will take twice that -- that fits in the trapdoor underneath the unit. I have posted pics of both of these in my gallery.
I just need to get the Amiga 1200 to be finished. Oh, and plenty of games. For productivity I'll stick with my MacBook Pro and AmigaOne 500 when I get it later. Whenever that will be. This is a $31,200 pay cut (annualized) that we'e talking about. Not just chicken feed. So it'll take me a little longer to pay off my credit cards. BIG deal.
That's it on the update front.
